What is Direct Primary Care? (DPC)
By Jersy Fleurant, MSN, APRN, FNP-C
If you have ever visited your primary care provider's office and dread waiting for hours to see your provider for 15 minutes or less. You leave the office feeling rushed and unheard, or avoid establishing with a primary care provider altogether due to healthcare costs; Direct Primary Care may offer a different approach.
At Fleurant Signature Health, we offer Direct Primary Care to patients in Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, and surrounding Treasure Coast communities, with both in-person and virtual follow-up options available.
Direct Primary Care is a membership-based approach to primary care. Instead of billing insurance for routine primary care services, patients pay a set monthly membership fee directly to the practice.
This allows for a more meaningful relationship between you and your healthcare provider.
What Does a DPC Membership Include?
Services included are similar to your traditional primary care insurance-based office visits. These services include preventive care, chronic disease management, medication management, acute & sick visits, lab review & follow-up, virtual visits when appropriate, care coordination & specialist referrals. Another perk is direct access to your provider through secure messaging & text access.
You can still keep your health insurance for services outside the practice, such as hospitalizations, specialist care, imaging, emergency services, and other services not included in the DPC membership.
Why Do Patients Choose DPC?
Patients choose DPC for a personalized healthcare experience. DPC practices often have smaller patient panels. This allows your provider an opportunity to understand your medical history, discuss your concerns, and develop a plan that fits your individual needs.
DPC may be especially appealing to individuals and families who are uninsured, have high-deductible insurance plans, are self-employed, or simply want a more accessible and personalized primary care experience.
Can I Have Insurance and Still Join DPC?
Yes. Direct Primary Care is not health insurance. Many DPC patients maintain insurance for emergencies, hospitalizations, specialists, imaging, procedures, and other expenses outside of their membership.
